Cake is from Venus; Pie is from Mars

(ARA) - You can add one more thing to your list of the ways men and women are different. It's what's for dessert, according to a new survey by the makers of Comstock and Wilderness fruit pie filling and dessert toppings.

"Ice cream is the favorite dessert of nearly half (47.2%) of both men and women," said Melissa Tillmann, marketing manager for Comstock and Wilderness. "But, after that there's a big split; men like pie while women prefer cake."

A total of 28.8 percent of men gave pie their first place vote, compared with only 18.5 percent of women. But when it came to cake, the numbers were reversed. Cake was the number one choice of 21.7 percent of women, but only 14.3 percent of men. Ice cream, pie and cake finished 1-2-3 in the telephone survey of 1,000 adults, ahead of such standards as brownies, cookies and pudding.

"The interesting thing is not just that men like pie and women like cake. The survey also found that, like so many other things in life, women seem to associate desserts with relationships and special occasions," Tillmann said. "Men aren't oblivious to those connections, but they're much less important. With men, the dessert's the thing, not the occasion."

Seventy-six percent of the women in the survey associated desserts with holidays and 70.6 percent said birthdays, compared with less than half of men. More than half (51.7%) of women said they make dessert to cheer someone up. It was the third most important association overall. That notion occurred to only a third (35.3%) of men.

"I guess the lesson is if you want to do something nice for a man, give him pie with ice cream," Tillmann said. "And don't wait for his birthday."

For a dessert that's sure to please both men and women, try the fast Cherry Swirled Cheese Cake.
