Rejoice parents, children and
kids at heart: Finding Nemo is available on video and
DVD! In case you've been
stationed in
Iraq
(the only
way you could have missed the media hoopla), Finding Nemo is
the
story of an overprotective clownfish daddy, his brave little
son,
a Blue
Tang with serious memory trouble, and an ocean full of hilarious
supporting
characters -- I mean, sea life.
Marlin is thrilled about the prospect of starting
a family with wife Coral, until tragedy strikes and he's left
to raise baby
Nemo alone.
Marlin doesn't want to let Nemo out of his sight and panics when
he learns
that Nemo's class is going on a field trip to the Great Drop-off.
The "kids" dare each other to touch
the bottom of a boat floating on the surface and,
to Marlin's horror, Nemo is caught by a dentist with a tropical
fish tank in
his office.
Marlin sets off to rescue his son and is aided
somewhat by Dory, who has almost no short-term memory. They encounter
jellyfish,
sharks
trying to rehab their image, and a few surfer-dude turtles along
the way to
finding Nemo.
Meanwhile, the fish in the dentist's aquarium
take Nemo under their fins and devise a dangerous plan to send
him home. Will
Marlin find
Nemo? Will Dory remember anything for longer than two minutes?
Will Bruce
the Shark be able to remember that "Fish are friends, not
food"?
Will you be
able to handle your preschoolers shouting, "Grab shell,
dude!"?
The two-DVD set comes with the obligatory deleted
scenes and commentary, but that's where the comparison to other
movies ends.
Finding
Nemo comes with so many extra goodies, you won't know where to
start! Have
the kids been pestering you for an aquarium? Pop in either disc
and let them
enjoy the virtual aquariums, stocked with the movie's cast. They
get the
fish, and you don't have more mouths to feed! Join the kids for
a
rousing
round of "Fisharades" and tour the Pixar studio. Don't
miss Knick
Knack, a
cute short film from the studio's early days.
If your little "shark bait" has been
eager to learn more about
deep-sea life, look no further than Disc 2. "Exploring the
Reef
with
Jean-Michel Cousteau" (yes, Jacques' boy) takes viewers
on a trip
to the
Great Barrier Reef in Australia while he makes a documentary
--
until Dory,
Marlin and Nemo show up.For more of a fishy education, check
out "Learning Fun
with Mr.
Ray's Encyclopedia." Nemo's teacher tells all about the
fish that
inspired
this movie.
Finding Nemo comes from Pixar, the studio that
gave us Monsters, Inc. and the Toy Story movies. As fantastic
as the animation
was
in those
movies, Nemo blows them out of the water. This may be animation,
but
comparing it to, say, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is like comparing
Brie to Cheese Whiz. If this movie isn't nominated for at least
a
technical Academy Award next year, it'll be a travesty. Give
the
whole
family an early holiday present and get Finding Nemo. It's easy
to find for
under $20 and it's worth every penny.
